Gingham shirt + daisy shorts

The weather has been hot recently in Chicago, so Dan and I took full advantage of it on our day off together last week. We love riding our bikes as much as possible; basically any non-rainy day off we have together we will ride our bikes somewhere. Last Friday we went to Pequod’s for their amazing lunch special. Monday-Friday you can get a pop and a personal pizza for just five dollars! It’s also the best deep dish pizza ever created.  Afterwards we headed towards Lake Michigan so we could ride the trail. We stopped at Montrose Beach and enjoyed a walk along the edge of the water. Neither of us wore our swimsuit so we stayed out of the lake. I’m hoping we take a trip there this weekend because neither of us have to work, although I’m sure it will be pretty crowded.

Last weekend also marked my first ever attendance at a Roller Derby competition. My mom’s cousin is a blocker on the Chicago Outfit Roller Derby Team. She had a meet last weekend and I was super excited to attend. I didn’t really remember anything about it, the only time I’ve seen any roller derby was in that one movie with Ellen Page. Luckily she filled us in on the general goal of the sport and there was a diagram with the rules in a handout they gave us.  Let me just say that those are some tough women out there and it is awesome what they can do! Maybe if I was more experienced with roller skating, I’d give it a try, but I’m not sure if I have what it takes. In addition to the derby, they were some local crafters selling things and there was a local brewery and coffee shop selling drinks. If you ever have the chance to check out a roller derby I highly recommend it!

  • I haven’t heard of Pequods… but the best deep dish ever, eh? I mean… Chicago is notorious for the deep dish pizza… so I’ll keep this spot in mind!!

You mentioned the roller skating… I didn’t know your aunt was participating. Did the place you go to have an open skate concept, too?

    • There are only 2 Pequods, one in Lincoln Park and one up in Morton Grove. They caramalize their crust so it almost looks burnt at the edges but it tastes delicious. Deep dish is usually not my favorite, but I would eat Pequods like all the time!

The derby was actually at the Windy City Fieldhouse, so it wasn’t actually a roller rink. Before they started, they had to put down these special boards and tape them to the ground so they could skate on it. They basically made the space in which they competed.

We should go to Pequods next time you’re in Chicago!

  • Ah, roller derby looks so fun! There’s a team here in Atlanta, but I’ve never made it out to see them in action. That’s neat that you have a family member on the team!

    • I highly recommend it! It was super entertaining even though we didn’t really know what was going on half the time! haha

  • Your outfit is so cute, I never would’ve guessed that it was thrifted! Would love to see some tips on how to score great clothes!

I’ve never seen roller derby in person, but it sounds like a great summer experience.

    • Thank you Angelina! Those shorts are one of my favorite pieces I’ve found! I got those at a Crossroads, which is a resale store that only takes brand name, high quality pieces. It is a bit more expensive than say a Goodwill, but they have really nice stuff and there is always a sales rack!
